Chief of Staff, Engineering

Come Dream with Us at Hatch

There’s nothing like a great night’s sleep—the cozy, wrapped-up-in-a-heavy-blanket kind of sleep. The fire-crackling, curtains-drawn, DO NOT DISTURB kind of sleep. You know, the good stuff.

But here’s the thing: while 85% of people agree sleep is the key to their well-being, more than half are unsatisfied with their own. Whether it’s stress, interruptions, work, or little ones waking in the night, so many people need help getting truly restorative rest.

That’s where we come in. At Hatch, we’re on a mission to help people build better sleep habits—so they can feel more focused, energized, and present in their lives. We’ve designed best-in-class smart sleep devices, paired with science-backed sleep content, to help people unwind nightly, sleep deeply, and wake gently. More than 5 million sleepers of all ages have made space for rest with Hatch, with our baby products in 1 in 3 nurseries and our adult product, Restore, taking over nightstands (and TikTok) worldwide.

We are open to candidates across the U.S. and Canada, with a strong preference for those located in New York or San Francisco. Hatch is based in California, so we ask that you’re available during PST/PDT hours.

The Opportunity

We're seeking a Chief of Staff to the VP of Engineering who is a force-multiplier for engineering leadership — driving decision velocity, organizational clarity, and execution rigor across a scaling hardware and software organization.

This role is best suited for someone who enjoys both shaping direction and driving it forward in practice. You'll be deeply involved in the planning, dependencies and operating cadence of the engineering organization. You'll surface blockers before they escalate, and drive alignment across a complex multi-disciplinary team including mobile, backend, embedded and data groups. You'll be expected to make independent judgment calls, translate ambiguity into structured action, and move the organization toward decisions — not wait for them.

You'll partner closely with the VP of Engineering and the extended engineering leadership team to connect priorities with company strategy, own the operating cadence (planning cycles, leadership meetings, and cross-functional alignment rhythms), and represent engineering with clarity and credibility in cross-functional forums. You'll drive outcomes through influence, not hierarchy.

This is a high-trust role for someone who can quickly build context in complex environments, communicate with precision, and drive outcomes with a strong sense of ownership.

This role reports directly to the VP of Engineering and serves as a core member of the Engineering Leadership team, playing an active role in shaping priorities, decisions and execution.

What You’ll Do

Within 3 Months

Build a deep understanding of Hatch’s organizational and technical ecosystem

Form strong partnerships with leaders from within Engineering as well as Product, Design, Content and Marketing in order to connect siloed work streams (i.e. dependencies across backend, mobile, product, and hardware)

Create a consistent and transparent communication cadence that highlights engineering’s roadmap and impact, while openly addressing challenges.

Build a clear understanding of roles, ownership, and opportunities to improve alignment across the organization.

Within 6 Months

Lead or co-lead strategic initiatives within Engineering and cross-functionally

Translate complex technical progress into crisp narratives for the exec team

Own the roadmap for engineering-led initiatives

Establish explicit ownership of improving operating systems (e.g., planning, dependency management, leadership forums)

Represent the VP of Engineering in cross-functional forums, ensuring alignment on priorities and surfacing tradeoffs clearly

After 1 Year

Act as a strategic force multiplier, defining and executing engineering strategies and initiatives

Establish scalable systems for visibility, coordination, and execution

Drive alignment and execution on Hatch’s biggest strategic bets, ensuring engineering is operating with focus and accountability

Contribute to and enable an engineering culture that embodies our Hatch values

You'll Know You're Succeeding When:

The VP of Engineering has more time for strategic priorities and high-leverage work

Engineering's biggest initiatives are moving faster with clearer ownership

Cross-functional partners consistently know what engineering is doing and why it matters, and have clarity on timelines, risks and dependencies

You've become the go-to person for connecting dots across the product and engineering organization

What You’ll Bring

Leadership: Proven experience in a leadership role, preferably as a Chief of Staff or Business Operations leader, partnering with CTOs or other senior executives, in a startup or a consulting environment

Technical Acumen: Strong technical experience with the ability to understand system architectures, engage credibly with engineers and translate between engineering and business stakeholders, and understand tradeoffs and dependencies across systems

Exceptional Communication: Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
